Number of gang members imprisoned in El Salvador exceeded 80 thousand

San Salvador, May 3 (Prensa Latina) The number of gang members imprisoned in El Salvador exceeded 80 thousand, the majority, members of the Mara Salvatrucha (MS), the Attorney General of the Republic, Rodolfo Delgado, reported today.

Of the 80,095 individuals captured during two years of the emergency regime, 71,356 are detained with judicial measures against them while they are processed.

Statistics from the Prosecutor’s Office indicate that of those arrested, 55,114 belong to the MS, 24,450 are members of gang 18 and 531 belong to other criminal structures such as Mao Mao and the Machine.

The prosecutor assured that there are gang members who have already been convicted of crimes and judicial processes prior to the application of the state of emergency.

Official information indicated that it is the department of San Salvador where most of the arrests were made with 22,210, of which 10,793 are from the MS, 11,159 from the 18 and 258 belong to other gangs.
