Finland’s Parliament restricts the right to strike

Helsinski, May 8 (Prensa Latina) The right to strike will be restricted in Finland after the implementation of bills approved today by the Parliament that limit that option, the press office of the legislature reported.

The maximum duration of a political demonstration will be limited to 24 hours, while for others a maximum period of two weeks is given, after the new regulations come into force.

The regulations, which will come into force as from July 1, regulate the fines to be imposed on workers participating in unauthorized protests and specify other measures.

The context surrounding this event is marked by union protests against the Petteri Orpo government’s reforms, which affect pension payments, sick pay, unemployment benefits, insurance contributions and facilitate worker dismissal.

Large-scale strikes have been held in Finland since December 2023 in various spheres, from kindergartens to industrial enterprises, according to the local press, but this alternative has not yielded the desired result so far, analysts say. ef/abo/ro/ehl
