Petro’s request to defend progressivism marked week in Colombia

Bogota, May 11 (Prensa Latina) President Gustavo Petro's request to the people to defend the government project underway, the declaration of a war on corruption, and cabinet meetings with popular neighborhoods marked the week ending today in Colombia.

After the filing of a report by two magistrates of the National Electoral Council (CNE), requesting the formulation of charges for alleged irregularities associated with the spending limits of the presidential campaign, executed by the current president, the head of State described the action as an open constitutional breach and arbitrariness.

According to him, this constitutes a stratagem that puts democracy in emergency and entails the beginning of a soft coup, for which he called on the popular sectors to lead a greater mobilization than the one that took place last May 1st as an exercise to defend the constitutional order of the country.

To every woman, to every popular youth, to every working man, I invite you to change history, to deepen democracy, the president said in a statement made from Cartagena (north), where he traveled with part of his cabinet to announce measures in support of the poorest populations.

Earlier, in the same call, the president asked every soldier of the Republic, officer, non-commissioned officer, not to raise any weapon against the people of Colombia in their free expression and demonstration.

In another part of his speech, he also stated that, if the opposition sectors decide to violate the popular vote in Colombia in 2022, the constituent power will be established, once and for all, through the massive mobilization of the Colombian people.
