Russia assesses China’s initiatives for peace in Ukraine

Moscow, May 16 (Prensa Latina) Russia welcomes all initiatives for peace in Ukraine, especially the proposals of the People's Republic of China, Presidential Spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Thursday.

In statements made to Izvestia newspaper on Thursday, the Kremlin spokesman expressed that the Ukrainian issue will undoubtedly be discussed during the Chinese-Russian summit that began in Beijing this Thursday.

“Any peace initiative is welcome. Moscow is particularly impressed by the Chinese side’s vision of possible prospects and ground for initiating attempts to resolve the situation,” Peskov added.

China states that negotiations are the only way to resolve the Ukrainian crisis and defend essential principles in this regard, in particular, preventing the extension of hostilities to third countries and their involvement in the conflict.

It also calls for avoiding the escalation of military operations, not using weapons of mass destruction, in particular nuclear and biological weapons, refraining from attacks on civilians and nuclear facilities, and avoiding statements and actions that would make the prospect of a ceasefire more remote.

On April 9, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi expressed hope that hostilities in Ukraine would cease as soon as possible. Wang reiterated that China seeks the rapid restoration of peace and stability in the European continent and will continue to play a constructive role in this regard.
