Production plan in Nicaragua seeks to reduce poverty

Managua, May 17 (Prensa Latina) The Government of Nicaragua is promoting a national plan for production, consumption, and commerce 2024-2025, which has among its objectives the reduction of poverty and inequality in the country.

The president of the Central Bank of Nicaragua and coordinator of the National System of Production, Consumption, and Commerce, Ovidio Reyes, explained on television that the said plan projects economic growth in key sectors, and establishes six policies to guarantee food security; he also specified that the purpose is to reach one hundred percent of the products that Nicaraguans consume.

Reyes noted the bean production and expressed that not only is it produced for national consumption, but it is also exported.

According to the bank’s CEO, rice imports are required, since production is at 70 percent and the goal is to achieve security in the product.

Reyes commented that the issue of food security is intended to be achieved through the promotion of family farming since the small producers are the ones who intensively cultivate the grain.

The coordinator also referred to plant and animal health, highlighting the importance of developing laboratories, conducting examinations and inspections to guarantee safety, and carrying out a pest and disease eradication program.

As Reyes explained, other policies aimed at guaranteeing food security are linked to increasing internal trade and exports, improving technical and university education in rural areas, and implementing resilient measures against climate variability.
