Russia highlights role of Raisi and Abdollahian in bilateral ties

Moscow, May 20 (Prensas Latina) Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov highlighted the role in bilateral cooperation of the president of Iran, Ebrahim Raisi, and his foreign minister, Hossein Amir Abdollahian, who died on Sunday in a helicopter crash.

“We will always remember these eminent political figures as true patriots of the Islamic Republic, who have firmly defended the interests of their state and selflessly dedicated their lives to the service of the Fatherland,” highlights Lavrov’s message, published on the Foreign Ministry’s official website.

“Raisi and Abdollahian were known as true and reliable friends of our country, and their role in strengthening mutually beneficial cooperation and a trusting partnership between Russia and Iran is invaluable,” added Lavrov.

The minister also emphasized that Moscow is “deeply saddened” by the death of the dignitaries, and expressed “the deepest condolences to the families and friends of the victims, as well as to all the friendly people of Iran. Our thoughts and hearts are with you,” he concluded.

According to Article 131 of the Iranian Constitution, First Vice President Mohammad Mojber will assume presidential duties until the next elections, which must be convened within 50 days by a council integrated by the heads of the executive, legislative, and judicial branches.
