Venezuelan Parliament to debate bill on NGOs

Caracas, May 21 (Prensa Latina) The National Assembly of Venezuela will debate in second discussion the draft bill on Supervision, Regularization, Performance and Financing of Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) and Related Organizations.

The first vice president of the United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV), Diosdado Cabello, said that the bill should be approved after long debates and popular consultations, and added that these alleged Non-Governmental Organizations do not depend on Venezuela, but on the United States, so “in conclusion, they are not non-governmental.”

“We are going to test the Law on Supervision, Regularization, Action and Financing of Non-Governmental Organizations and Related Organizations, which has a lot to do with this financing, with how the money reaches them,” Cabello said in response to a question about funds received by opposition politician María Corina Machado.

The official assured that “everyone is going to have to register, (explain) where the funds come from and how they spend them,” and recognized that this is a historic debt of approving the bill. “We are sure those who are going to scream are the same ones who receive money from abroad. If you don’t owe it, don’t worry about it,” he noted.

The bill was presented by Cabello in Parliament last January, after it was approved by a majority in the first discussion, and its objective is to supervise the functioning of NGOs that operate in the Bolivarian Republic.
