Alarm in Italy due to seismic activity in the Flegreos Fields

Rome, May 23 (Prensa Latina) The seismic activity that this week intensified in the volcanic crater of the Phlegraean Fields, near the southern city of Naples, keeps the country on alert today, while actions are being evaluated to face the risks.

A communiqué published on the official site of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers states that after an emergency meeting held the day before at Palazzo Chigi, Government headquarters, the head of Civil Protection, Nello Musumeci, pointed out that ‘we must be prepared for any eventuality’.

The scientific community says that the tremors can last a month, a year, they can evolve or die out tomorrow’, said Musumeci after the strong tremors that reached 3.6 on the Richter scale, while the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) predicted that the earthquakes will continue.

The Phlegraean Fields are located nine kilometers northwest of Naples, in the Campania region, and most of it is under the water, although it has 24 crater mouths and volcanic elevations, some with gaseous effusive manifestations in the Solfatara area of Pozzuoli, as well as hydrothermal ones in Lago d’Agnano and Pozzuoli.

About 40 000 years ago the volcanic activity of the same produced an explosion that erupted 680 cubic kilometers of magma and scientists assure that this event meant the disappearance of Neanderthal Man and his replacement by Homo Sapiens.
