Damascus calls for new approach to Syrian refugees

Damascus, May 31 (Prensa Latina) The Government rejected on Friday calls by some European Governments at the recent Brussels Conference for Syrian refugees not to return to their country.

Cited by several media, Syria’s permanent representative to the United Nations, Qusay al-Dahhak, said at the UNSC meeting that these statements dismiss calls by eight European nations to re-evaluate misguided European policies and take new approaches to allow for the voluntary return of displaced people.

It would have been more effective to allocate funds to facilitate and support this return by creating early recovery projects and improving services and basic needs for Syrians, the diplomat explained.

Qusay al-Dahhak called for the immediate, complete and unconditional lifting of coercive measures applied by the United States and the European Union against the Syrian people.

These punitive measures constitute collective punishment by the U.S. administration and the European Union, forcing Syrians to drown in the seas as they migrate and seek refuge, he noted.

He denounced that some governments claim to be working for the Syrian people, yet they have been directly involved in supporting terrorism and spreading chaos and destruction in the country.
