Cuban poet awarded Gala Prize in Spain

Madrid, Jun 6 (Prensa Latina) The saga of Cuban poets awarded in Spain maintained its line, with the 18th Antonio Gala International Prize for the author of "El libro de los golpes", Carlos Manuel Gomez.

Gomez, 33 years old, joins a growing group of poets from Cuba, curiously all from the central province of Villa-Clara, who have won awards in Spain in recent years.

Reiniel Perez Ventura, winner of the Loewe Prize in its highest category in 2023, Sergio Garcia Zamora, who in 2016 won the award for Young Creation of the Loewe, which was also won in 2024 by Ernesto Delgado, with his book Pálpito.

The decision in the case of Gomez, was announced Thursday by the City Council of Alhaurin el Grande, Malaga, and the jury of this contest, chaired by the Spanish writer of British origin Ben Clark.

According to the jury, it is a collection of poems of the highest quality that shocks and excites with its social conscience and its symbolic depth. “The poet uses the poetic word to vindicate the values of solidarity, fraternity and human dignity without falling for it in the lyrical fainting that is usually associated with the so-called social poetry,” the jury expressed.
