Turkey imposes 40 percent tariff on vehicle imports from China

Ankara, Jun 9 (Prensa Latina) Türkiye will impose an additional 40% tariff on vehicle imports from China at a minimum of US$7,000, starting July 7, the Ministry of Commerce announced on Sunday.

According to a statement, the additional tariff will be applied to purchases of conventional and hybrid passenger vehicles from China in order to increase and protect the declining share of domestic vehicle production.

The text adds that this decision takes into account current account deficit targets and efforts to encourage investment and domestic production.

Türkiye imposed additional tariffs on electric vehicle imports from China back in 2023 and introduced some regulations regarding the maintenance and servicing of electric cars. Iccording to experts, the government is encouraging more vehicle production and exports to reduce the current account deficit, which stood at US$45.2 billion in 2023.
