UN celebrates 60th anniversary of UNCTAD

Geneva, Jun 12 (Prensa Latina) The United Nations (UN) is celebrating on Wednesday the 60th anniversary of its Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), focused on strengthening the global voice on behalf of developing countries.

The event also renames the entity as UN Trade and Development and brings together world leaders in a high-level forum.

Chaired by UN Secretary-General (UNSG) Antonio Guterres, the event’s theme is “Charting a new development course in a changing world.”

UNCTAD acknowledged that six decades after its founding, the world economy has witnessed the rise of the Global South, the evolution of a digital economy, and the reduction in poverty and hunger in human history.

Current context confirms a growing economic diversity and decentralization, even as humanity becomes increasingly interdependent globally.

The entity advocates for a profound paradigm shift, encompassing everything from technological leaps to finance and trade, for a global race for climate action.
