Austria has no plans to join NATO

Vienna, Jul 10 (Prensa Latina) Austria does not intend to join the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), neither does it refuse to associate with the military alliance, Foreign Minister Alexander Schallenberg affirmed on Wednesday.

Militarily, we are a neutral country. We do not plan on joining NATO. For us, the European security architecture consists not only of NATO but also of the European Union and the OSCE,” the foreign minister told ORF Radio station.

He said that Austria has been participating in NATO’s Partnership for Peace program since 1995 and intends to continue this interaction.

Schallenberg was also invited to a NATO summit in Washington on July 9-11 but did not go because Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi visits Vienna.

Indian Foreign Secretary Subrahmanyam Jaishankar accompanies him, so I must be here,” the diplomat added.
