Dominican and Cuban singers enrapture ears with Caribbean Symphony

Santo Domingo, Sep 7 (Prensa Latina) Cuban singers Amaury Pérez and Liuba Maria Hevia joined Dominican peers Maridalia Hernandez and Pavel Nuñez on Thursday night, enrapturing audiences at the Eduardo Brito National Theater in this capital.

The concert “Sinfonía Caribeña” (Caribbean Symphony) brought together the four singer-songwriters for almost three hours, when they passionately sang their hearts out in each song, accompanied by the Santo Domingo Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Maestro Amaury Sánchez.

Núñez, first to take to the stage, showed a special connection with his fans, who joined him in some of his hits, such as “Te Me Perdiste” (You Missed Me) and “Paso a Paso” (Step by Step).

With more than four decades on stage, poet and composer Liuba Maria Hevia performed “Mi Vieja Habana” (My Old Havana), which she dedicated to her “beloved Havana” and to the city’s late historian Eusebio Leal, of whom she said “he left his heart in the people of Havana.”

“Si Me Falta Tu Sonrisa” (If I Miss Your Smile), one of the artist’s best-known songs, and “Con los hilos de la luna” (With the Threads of the Moon), inspired by her Asturian grandfather, and “a tribute to the emigrants,” were the repertoire chosen by Hevia.

She then went on to join Maridalia Hernández, whom Hevia described as “unique and the voice of the Dominican Republic”, in a duet performance of “Ausencia” (Absence), one of the many milestones in the latter’s career, that she especially dedicated to the memory of late compatriot crooner Sonia Silvestre.

Maridalia, a beloved figure in her country, won over her followers last night with her powerful voice and charisma, with such tunes as “Te Ofrezco” (I Offer You), “Para Quererte” (To Love You), and “Nuestro Amor” (Our Love).

Seasoned Cuban singer-songwriter Amaury Perez was next, saying as an introduction that in his first visit to the Dominican Republic, 46 years ago, he had experienced the Dominicans’ loyalty, sincerity, and joy. He then delighted the audience with some of his most beautiful ballads, namely “Acuerdate de Abril” (Remember April), “Hacerte Venir” (Making You Come to Me) and “Solo en Septiembre” (Only in September), among others.

“Sinfonía Caribeña” came to a luxurious ending with the performance of the song “A Santiago en Coche” (To Santiago on a Stagecoach) in a joint appearance by Amaury, Liuba, Maridalia and Pavel, which brought the audience to their feet, prompting them to abandon themselves to dance and cheering.
