Sudanese Govt. speeds up WHO’s aid delivery

Khartoum, Sep 8 (Prensa Latina) The Sudanese Government speeded up on Sunday the World Health Organization (WHO)’s delivery of humanitarian aid to the population by facilitating the procedures at the airport of Merowe.

According to a statement from the media office of the Sudanese Sovereign Council, the President of the Sovereign Council Abdelfatah al Burhan conveyed that determination to the WHO Director General Tedros Adhanom on his visit to Port Sudan.

Burhan highlighted the Government’s will to use Merowe airport and some other airfields by organizations to help deliver what the villagers need.

Merowe is the closest route to deliver aid to the Darfur regions, Adhanom said referring to the difficult domestic situation, under siege by the paramilitary group Rapid Support Forces and their clashes with the Sudanese Army.

The Director of WHO in the Eastern Mediterranean Region Hanan Hassan Balji assured that they will work in coordination with the regional office to rehabilitate some hospitals in Sudan and find financial and technical support for health institutions that were damaged by the war.

Meanwhile, the Sudanese Minister of Health Haitham Mohamed Ibrahim, who was also present at the meeting in Port Sudan, praised WHO’s work, and he further stressed the need to open border crossings with neighboring countries to facilitate the arrival of humanitarian aid to those affected by the crisis.
