Dominican lawyer calls Government “submissive” to US

Santo Domingo, Sep 9 (Prensa Latina) Dominican lawyer Ramon Antonio Veras accused on Monday his country’s Government of being submissive to the United States, as it allowed the US seizure of a Venezuelan State-owned aircraft on Dominican territory.

Veras reflected on the events of September 2, when the U.S. Department of Justice seized and transferred to the state of Florida an official Caracas aircraft, which was receiving maintenance on Dominican territory.

In an article entitled, “The Case of the Two Planes, an affront to Venezuela,” the Veras wrote in El Nuevo Diario that “in the agreements among the United States and nations that suffer governments unconditional to its policy, there is evidence of disharmony in the treatment” and “lack of reciprocity”.

He declared that “the mutual correspondence does not exist in the pacts between Washington and the governments that we Dominicans regret to support”, agreements that he qualified as “leonine”, which helps the Northern country execute its extraterritorial laws.

Regarding the confiscation of the Caracas plane, Veras said that Dominican officials, in response to the requirements of the U.S. Department of Justice, acted as facilitating agents to implement the seizure.

In Veras words, “the Attorney General’s Office of the Republic served as employee, subordinate and assistant” by placing the plane in the hands of the US authorities, “without stopping to analyze whether the request is legitimate or not”.

With this decision, he said, “this organ of the Dominican State has served as support, as an effective reinforcement in giving validity to a law issued in a foreign country”.
