Economic hardship drives Salvadorans to emigrate

San Salvador, Sep 9 (Prensa Latina) The economic precariousness due to the high cost of living and scarce job opportunities today drives Salvadorans to migrate, according to studies.

However, from January to May 2024, there was an apparent slowdown of 18 percent of Salvadorans that still intend to leave the country to the United States, perhaps, according to analysts, because of the closures at the southern US border.

The U.S. website Inter-American Dialogue, after some research, concluded that the migratory intentions in search of better living conditions and income are maintained.

This center of analysis and political exchange evaluated the situation of each Latin American and Caribbean country, taking as a reference the family remittances and the interest of the population to migrate.

The sample found that the population of El Salvador is at the top of the list of those seeking better conditions abroad, ahead of Honduras, Nicaragua and Guatemala.

Although it is anticipated that in 2024 there will be a lower contribution and growth of remittances from Salvadorans in relation to their neighbors, the intentions to leave the country, especially of people working in the countryside and in the informal economy remain on the rise.

In these sectors, that is, agriculture and informal employment, 80 percent of the population is located, the most poorly paid and with less stability in their work.
