During a meeting with ambassadors and chargés d’affaires of the member countries of the Security Council and representatives of the United Nations, the head of government condemned the continued Israeli crimes against the people of Lebanon.
In this regard, the highest figure of the executive described such aggressions as a clear violation of international law and a threat to the security and well-being of citizens in the Levantine nation.
In this regard, Mikati stressed that the Council’s response must be swift, forceful and aimed at protecting innocent civilians and members of the Civil Defense who strive to alleviate the suffering of the population.
The government authority urged the UN Security Council to assume its responsibility in preserving international law by holding accountable those responsible for attacks on Lebanese citizens.
At this point, he reaffirmed Lebanon’s commitment to peace and the protection of its people; while noting the importance of international cooperation and support to achieve lasting and constructive stability in the region.
After the meeting, Foreign Minister Abdullah Bou Habib reported that the Secretary General of the National Scientific Research Council exposed Israeli aggressions against Lebanese civilians, journalists and rescue workers.
According to the foreign minister, the UN ambassadors and officials confirmed their support for the protection of civilians and recalled the law established in Geneva providing protection to all during war.
At the same time, those present considered that the work of journalists during conflicts and the coverage of operations does not imply their support to a specific party, as does the work of rescue workers, said Bou Habib.
The Lebanese foreign minister stressed the agreement not to use the expression “de-escalation” but rather “stopping aggression.”
In this regard, he reiterated the government’s position on a ceasefire and an end to the war, as well as the willingness to conduct indirect negotiations with the Israelis to achieve this.
Bou Habib commented on the prime minister’s decision to request the UN mission to consult with the members of the Security Council to hold a session on Lebanon, in light of the Israeli attacks against civilians.
He also clarified that any decision on a cessation of hostilities must be through a new resolution and not a modified version of international provision 1701.
