Dominican Culture minister advocates museum’s comprehensive role

Santo Domingo, Sep 11 (Prensa Latina) Dominican Minister of Culture, Milagros German, today hailed the transformation of museums traditional role of hoarding exhibits into a more dynamic endeavor, that would extend to research, dissemination and participation.

Inaugurating a modern conference room and a library at the National Museum of History and Geography (MNHG), the official said that both spaces break away with the belief that the only function of these institutions is to display art collections, as opposed to a much comprehensive use that would ‘inspire, educate and connect with the public by goading them into actively engaging”.

The Ministry of Culture opened the remodeled Vetilio Alfau Duran Conference Hall and the Rodríguez Demorizi Library, both named after two prominent Dominican historians.

The official was accompanied by Carlos Andújar, general director of Museums; José G. Guerrero, director of the National Museum of History and Geography, and Marcial Najri, president of the National Museum of History and Geography Volunteers.

When taking the floor, Andujar expressed that ‘these spaces are part of the challenge of making museography something fun and rigorous at the same time, always with the mission of accompanying the national educational system and, with the implementation of an active animation program, turning the auditorium into a forum for the debate of ideas and permanent dialogue’.

In the words of the director of the MNHG, Jose G. Guerrero, the reopening of the conference hall, the library, and also the Research Department, will allow the institution to fulfill the objective of disseminating the value, historical and geographical heritage of the country.

The Vetilio Alfau Duran Conference Room, with capacity for 90 people, has been supplied with central booths, acoustic treatment, computers and new furniture.

Rodríguez Demorizi Library, which houses one of the most complete and valuable historical bibliographic collections in the country, was equipped with networked computers to facilitate access to information and its preservation.
