UN Security Council takes up issue of crisis in Sudan

United Nations, Sep 11 (Prensa Latina) The UN Security Council will reopen debates on the humanitarian situation in Sudan, amid concerns about the spread of famine and the impact of the war in the region.

The Council will also analyze the consequences of the hostilities in South Sudan once the most recent reports prepared by the organization are presented.

Last week, the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) expressed concern after famine conditions were detected in the Zamzam camp for internally displaced persons, near El-Fasher, in the North Darfur state. According to the agency, it is likely that thousands more people are suffering similar conditions in 13 other at-risk areas.

Sudan also reports the world’s worst displacement crisis, with more than 26 million people forced to leave their homes.

Heavy rains and floods, disease outbreaks, mainly cholera, also increase needs and worsen the humanitarian situation.

In areas at risk of famine, including El-Fasher, nearly 124,000 people have been affected by torrential rains in recent weeks.

Floods and stagnant water increase the risk of disease spread, with almost 2,900 suspected cases of cholera reported since the start of the latest outbreak in mid-August, OCHA warned this week.

The UN response to the complex context, however, faces a severe lack of funding, with only 41 percent of its Humanitarian Needs and Response Plan established for this year.
