Arevalo reiterates call for anti-graft push in Guatemala

Guatemala City, Sep 12 (Prensa Latina) President Bernardo Arevalo insisted Thursday on the call to break the cycle of corruption embedded in the institutions of the Guatemalan Government and to never return to it.

In a solemn session in Congress on the 203rd anniversary of Independence, the president recalled that they lately chose to rid themselves from the weight that this yoke represents, which they cannot allow to continue subdue the people.

“Kneeling before the arrogance and greed of a few who are widening their pockets at the expense of the pain and suffering of their own people,” Arevalo described the issue in the presence of Vice President Karin Herrera and the head of the Judiciary, Oscar Cruz.

Also addressing authorities of the Legislative and young guests, the head of State considered that corruption has always been the antithesis of independence.

“It nurtures power structures and fuels frustration while preventing the real development of a society, increasing inequalities and injustices,” remarked the 65-year-old politician, considered the standard bearer of the Seed Movement party.

The president urged to protect independence as 203 years ago, and to break those schemes of abuse, for which he granted that the best way is to listen to that cry and longing for freedom that the people follow at every juncture of history.

Arevalo asked legislators to be attentive, but more importantly, to listen with concern, something that demands courage, never neglecting the pain and suffering, as demanded by the willingness to service justice.
