Government announcements on social security questioned in Panama

Panama City, Sep 13 (Prensa Latina) Popular organizations in Panama today questioned a presidential message on measures to face the current crisis of the Social Security Fund (CSS) and said they will state their position this weekend.

In a statement, the Pueblo Unido por la Vida alliance, which unites several collectives, among them the Frente Nacional por la Defensa de los Derechos Económicos y Sociales (National Front for the Defense of Economic and Social Rights), referred to the speech given to the country the day before by the President of the Republic, José Raúl Mulino, which he described as an imposition on known problems affecting pensioners.

The collectives pointed out that the President referred to the unification of the CSS and the Ministry of Health for the purchase and access to medicines, but without referring to the pharmaceutical monopolists responsible for the shortage and the unaffordable prices of these drugs, the highest in the region.

They also questioned the intentions to react to the delays in appointments, surgical delays or the lack of supplies, with the introduction of the private sector via outsourcing, for which health is a commodity.

On the other hand, they pointed out that they hope that Mulino’s announcement to move the Oncology Hospital to the current Health City is not just a change of location of the serious problems suffered by cancer patients all over the country, especially in the provinces of the interior.
