In a statement called “Open Letter to the Panamanian Government in defense of the sisterly Republic of Cuba,” the group urged the Executive to support the resolution that Havana will present at the upcoming United Nations General Assembly, demanding the end of hostile actions dating back more than six decades.
The blockade against Cuba affects all countries, because it prevents free trade and, therefore it also affects Panama and in particular the province of Colon, which hosts the largest free zone in the region, according to the text.
The friendly group pointed out that Panama cannot remain idly seeing this genocide, particularly “because here we have also suffered the imposition of the United States for many years, and our people have even been killed by its military forces, as occurred in 1964 and 1989,” the text added.
On the other hand, it stressed that there has not been a country in the history of humanity that has suffered as much as Cuba, just for defending its own economic, political and social model, an alternative to the neoliberalism that Washington is trying to impose.
The message highlighted that democracy in Cuba is genuine, the result of the historical struggle for its independence, a nation with spiritual strength, an example of dignity, heroism, brotherhood and solidarity despites all the hurdles.
The document quotes the report “Need to end the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States of America against Cuba,” which denounces, that in 60 years the blockade has caused material damages and losses to the island estimated at around one trillion 499 thousand 710 million dollars.
