Low birth rate jeopardizes Jamaica, experts warn

Kingston, Sep 18 (Prensa Latina) Experts in Jamaica on Wednesday urged the Government to step in and deal with the significant decline in the local birthrate, saying the problem has worsened in the last 20 years and will have-short term socio-economic consequences.

Loops Caribbean News website reported the specialists worries after learning of the drop in birthrates, citing the 56,134 babies born in 2000 stand in stark contrast with the 31,276 of 2022.

Accordingly, they have requested the authorities to raise public awareness on the need to take action, because the future of Jamaica is at stake, in the light oof eventual changes in demographic dynamics, with more elderly adults retiring and fewer young people to support households and joining the workforce.
