Drill in Mexico seeks to strengthen response to earthquakes

Mexico City, Sep 19 (Prensa Latina) Public and private institutions, as well as citizens of Mexico will participate in a national drill aimed at strengthening preparedness and response capabilities in the event of an earthquake.

A recent press release from the Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection, states that the initiative will not only allow to evaluate the actions of the members of the National Civil Protection System (Sinaproc), but also to make citizens aware of the importance of risk management.

The central hypothesis of this exercise, to be carried out at 11:00 local time (Mexico Central Time) will be a 7.5 magnitude earthquake with epicenter in Acapulco, in the state of Guerrero, located on the Pacific Ocean coast.

According to the communication, the seismic alert will be activated in Guerrero and the states of Oaxaca, Chiapas, Michoacán, Jalisco, Colima, Morelos, Mexico City, State of Mexico, Puebla and Tlaxcala, through 14,490 loudspeakers.

In addition, in this capital city, the alert will be activated for the first time by cell phone, which consists of sending a text message to indicate that it is a drill, so citizens are urged to be attentive, remain calm and follow the instructions of the Civil Protection.
