South African Trade Unions call for national protest

Pretoria, Sep 19 (Prensa Latina) The Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) called for a national day of protest on October 7 against unemployment, income inequality and poverty.

According to Cosatu spokesperson Zanele Sabela, the protests will take the form of marches and pickets in all the nation’s major cities and towns.

We hope that everyone will stop working, it is actually the World Day for Decent Work, so it is not arbitrary, it is because it is an important day for workers, the spokeswoman stressed.

Based on the renowned international Gini index, in 2023 South Africa qualified as the nation with the highest inequality in income distribution.

Also, South Africa is the country with the highest unemployment rate in the world, with more than 33 percent of the working population (according to age) without a steady job.

That situation mainly affects the youth, a sector where unemployment borders on 45 percent.
