UN calls for support to ceasefire in DRC

Kinshasa, Sep 21 (Prensa Latina) The head of the United Nations Department of Peace Operations, Jean Pierre Lacroix called Saturday on all those involved to support the implementation of the ceasefire in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

By completing his visit to the DRC, the UN envoy insisted on the need to support the diplomatic efforts made to implement the ceasefire agreed between the DRC and Rwanda, under the mediation of Angola, as well as to restore peace in the east of the country, according to a press release.

Lacroix further urged all armed groups to disarm unconditionally in order to give the ongoing political process a chance, according to the issued on the website of the United Nations Stabilization Mission in the DRC (MONUSCO).

The report referred to the meetings held with the Congolese Head of State, Felix Tshisekedi, the President of the National Assembly, Vital Kamerhe, the Prime Minister, Judith Suminwa Tuluka, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Therese Kayikwamba Wagner.

During these meetings, the diplomat praised the excellent collaboration between the DRC and the UN, in addition to addressing the future development of MONUSCO.

“It is important to mull over a withdrawal approach that takes into account the specificities of the security situation in the various zones, in accordance with the will expressed by the Congolese authorities to the Council of Ministers in July, 2024,” Lacroix underscored.
