Ghanaian president calls for Africa to be represented in UN body

United Nations, Sep 25 (Prensa Latina) Ghana´s President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo today called for Africa, a thriving continent with more than 1.4 billion inhabitants, to be represented in the United Nations Security Council.

Speaking before the UN General Assembly, the president expressed the need to reform the body of the world organization, in which, in addition to the African continent, Latin America and South Asia are underrepresented.

He said that the lack of representation of geographical areas in the Security Council, which has only five countries as permanent members, undermines its capacity as an organ to act effectively during crises and to be more influential and democratic.

“The world has changed and the Council must also transform itself to maintain its relevance in promoting world peace and security,” the president said in his speech.

On the other hand, the Ghanaian leader pointed out that African populations are not asking for small aid, but for opportunities in the global structure to have more access to education, health and jobs, and in this way build better lives.

Referring specifically to his country, Addo said that Ghana is progressing in the economic and social fields, with advances in the field of education, in which 5.7 million young people in basic secondary school receive education free of charge. These people -he said- had been denied the right to learn and dream of a better future.

The general debate of the 79th session of the General Assembly, in which Heads of State and other personalities from countries participate, started on the 24th of this month and will conclude on the 30th.
