General Humberto Ortega dies in Nicaragua

Managua, Sep 30 (Prensa Latina) Nicaragua’s retired General Humberto Ortega died early this morning, at 77 years of age and having suffered a protracted illness, as reported by the Sandinista government.

Through an official communiqué, the Executive recalled Ortega’s strategic contribution as a Sandinista militant since his early youth.

It highlighted his bravery in revolutionary military actions, such as the rescue of Commander Carlos Fonseca Amador in Costa Rica, where he was shot and lost the physical mobility of the upper part of his body.

It also extolled his writings and insurrectional and historical theories, which acted as an epic compilation of the heroic deeds by the Nicaraguan people and the Sandinista National Liberation Front.

Ortega leaves a legacy of guerrilla science and practices, as well as valuable foundations and testimonies of capacity, audacity and determination, which mark the revolutionary and anti-imperialist history of the Nicaraguan people, it added.

The statement highlighted “his uncanny merits and courageous and humble personality stood out, as well as his courage, bravery and consistency”.

The communiqué further assessed his contribution to the different stages of insurrectional struggle, followed by the inception of the Nicaraguan Army’s leadership, during the cruel years of the counterrevolutionary war imposed by the United States.

“May retired General Humberto Ortega Saavedra rest in peace, whose lucid analysis, proposals and insurrectional strategies are and will be a material of study for the different generations of consistent Nicaraguans, who give continuity to the enduring legacy of honor and glory of Diriangen, Nicarao, Adiact, Andres Castro, Jose Dolores Estrada, Benjamin Zeledon, Augusto Sandino, Carlos (Fonseca), Tomas (Borge), in Caminos de Victorias”, concluded the communiqué.
