Bolivian President issues decree to support retirees

La Paz, Oct 1 (Prensa Latina) Some 152 thousand Bolivian retirees will start benefitting today from the new Law modifying the solidarity limits for old-age pension, as promulgated by President Luis Arce.

“We are increasing their income by one thousand bolivianos. Starting today, our working brothers who retire and those who are already retired, will earn one thousand additional bolivianos,” said Arce during the ceremony Tuesday at the Casa Grande del Pueblo (government headquarters).

Arce addressed members of the Bolivian Workers’ Central (COB), retirees, representatives of social organizations and national authorities.

The treatment and approval of this regulation had been delayed in the Plurinational Legislative Assembly (ALP) since 2023, till final promulgation now at the headquarters of the Executive Branch.

The head of State recalled that the draft regulations of the new law had established 65 years of age as the top to access to retirement.

However, some sectors, especially doctors, opposed it, and were joined by opposition deputies and senators.

“We had to give in – explained Arce – to guarantee approval based on the greater good, which is to benefit all these workers who are benefiting today.”

According to the data presented by the president, the country’s Comprehensive Pension System currently exceeds 152 thousand members, all of whom will benefit now.

“Those with lower incomes must be supported, in a kind of income redistribution that is basically the philosophy of our Community Productive Social Economic Model that is still in force, that continues to bear fruit for the working class,” he said.

He added that these are people who worked for 10 years, for whom a minimum solidarity limit of 720 bolivianos (more than 100 dollars) is guaranteed, while those who worked for 35 years will see an increase in the solidarity limit of more than 5,200 bolivianos (over 740 dollars).
