Four-day workday suggested to reduce consumption in Ecuador

Quito, Oct 1 (Prensa Latina) The business association in Ecuador suggested to the Government of the country to reduce working day to four, so as to lower electricity consumption in view of the crisis that this sector is facing today.

The Chamber of Small and Medium Enterprises of Pichincha (Capeipi) proposed to reduce working hours to 10 hours a day and that half of the population should work from Monday to Thursday, from 7:00 to 17:00, to take advantage of daylight.

Meanwhile, the other 50 percent of the workers would work from Thursday to Sunday, on the same schedule, with rest from Monday to Wednesday, according to the proposal of the business association.

For Capeipi, this would allow limiting electricity service at night for 50 percent of the population and implementing daytime power cuts for the other 50 percent.

The energy crisis in Ecuador worsened in mid-April, with outages of up to 13 hours in some places. Today, this situation persists in the national territory and, according to the Executive, the cuts will vary depending on the amount of water entering the reservoirs.

This Tuesday, the Minister of Energy and Mines, Antonio Goncalves, is summoned to appear before the National Assembly (Parliament) to explain the actions taken to face the crisis.
