Colombian government issued decree regulating use of police force

Bogota, Oct 8 (Prensa Latina) The Colombian government issued a decree that for the first time regulates the use of force by the police in order to strengthen the protection of human rights, it was announced today.

According to the Cabinet Secretary of the Ministry of National Defense, Alexandra González, Decree 1231 prioritizes dialogue and peaceful conflict resolution, establishing a new model of police intervention that adapts to the seriousness of each situation, which seeks to avoid the disproportionate use of force.

This norm is an unprecedented advance that defines how the entities in charge of security should act, always seeking to minimize the impact on the population and prioritize peaceful resolution, the official said.

According to the information released, the text establishes a clear framework for intervention and also incorporates norms that limit and regulate the use of force, emphasizing proportionality and containment in situations of public order.

“This decree is a reflection of our commitment to the country and to the construction of a more just society, where the use of force is the last option and always within the framework of the law and respect for human rights,” Gonzalez stressed
