Expectation grows in Bolivia as Evo Morales goes to court

La Paz, Oct 10 (Prensa Latina) Growing expectation surrounds the impending appearance today by former president Evo Morales at a Bolivian court, which is to rule on his alleged involvement in human trafficking and aggravated sexual abuse.

“We are certain that Mr. Evo Morales and others will appear to tell their truth and clarify the charges they are facing,” Minister of Justice, César Siles, told the press in La Paz.

The arrest warrant was issued on September 26 and was later annulled by a judge who argued irregularities from a legal point of view.

Morales has already been summoned to appear before judges and stated that he will go to court, adding he will win the case, which he described as political persecution by the administration of President Luis Arce.

Speaking last Wednesday to the Kawsachum Coca channel and escorted by his lawyer and former Minister of Government Carlos Romero, the ex- president denounced that the Government issued an alleged arrest warrant when he arrived in Tarija to testify.

Romero explained that on the occasion there was an impressive deployment by elite officers, including policemen from Tarija, Oruro and Potosí, and credited the move to the current Interior Minister Eduardo del Castillo.

Minister Siles further stated that such deployment must be preceded by an arrest warrant, in case the accused fail to appear in court.

“Let no one believe this is political persecution, what we are seeking is for the judicial authorities and the Public Prosecutor’s Office to do their job,” he indicated.
