Authorities assess earthquake damage in eastern Cuba

Granma, Cuba, Nov 11 (Prensa Latina) Cuban Deputy Prime Minister Eduardo Martínez, along with authorities from this eastern province, assessed the damage caused by two earthquakes here on Sunday.

Martínez was accompanied by Jorge Luis Broche, head of the Department of Attention to the Social Sector of the Communist Party of Cuba, and Major General Ramón Pardo, head of the Civil Defense General Staff.

On his X profile, the deputy prime minister stated that upon arrival in Granma on Sunday, local authorities confirmed that there were no deaths as a direct consequence of the earthquake, but several injuries were reported.

Cuba’s eastern region, and Granma in particular, was shaken by 6.0 and 6.8 magnitude earthquakes and their aftershocks, which damaged infrastructure, caused partial collapses in homes and stairs, and cracked walls.

The earth tremors also caused severe damage to electrical and communications networks, among other damages, as the region struggles to recover from the ravages of Hurricane Oscar last month.

Cuba is pushing to recover from the damage caused by these events, as well as from category 3 Hurricane Rafael, which hit the western part of the country last Wednesday.
