Colombia seeks alternatives to supply energy to Ecuador

Bogota, Nov 15 (Prensa Latina) The Ministry of Mines and Energy of Colombia confirmed on Thursday that the modification of a resolution to allow exports of energy to Ecuador from surpluses was published for comments.

According to Minister Andrés Camacho, the sale would be made as long as the national demand is covered and only through thermal plants, which, in his opinion, opens an additional mechanism to help the neighboring territory.

“As soon as the nation has the energy conditions to reactivate the export of energy, we will do so, not only as part of an international treaty but also as a commitment to that sister country,” the official noted.

Camacho added that he keeps close communication with Ecuadorian authorities regarding this matter. Thermal generation in Colombia represents 31 percent of the total, since the main source of energy is hydroelectric power, which provides two thirds of the demand.

Ecuador has asked the Colombian Government to resume exports due to the energy deficit that causes daily blackouts 12 and 14 hours in that country.

Colombia suspended sales a few months ago due to a reduction of water in its reservoirs.
