German Green Party against sale of Taurus missiles to Ukraine

Berlin, Nov 17 (Prensa Latina) The Union-90/Green Party will vote against the authorization for the sale of Taurus long-range missiles to Ukraine, if this coincides with the position of the Social Democratic Party (SPD) in the Bundestag (parliament).

We are now discussing how to coordinate positions in the votes in the legislature with the conservative coalition of the Christian Democratic and Social Christian Unions (CDU/CSU) and with the SPD, with which we still form a government, commented the deputy of the Green faction Irene Mijalic.

We, as before, form an executive with the SPD and we will vote accordingly, declared the parliamentarian to the daily Der Tagesspiegel, in reference to the authorization for the shipment of the Taurus to Kyiv, to which Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz expressed his opposition.

The refusal of the Social Democrat leader to allow the delivery of the aforementioned rockets to Ukraine caused tensions between both nations and open criticism from President Vladimir Zelensky in European forums.

The Ukrainian issue was one of the reasons for the breakup of the alliance in power, formed by Social Democrats, Liberal Democrats and Greens.

The day before, deputies of the Free Democrats announced that they would take the issue of the sale of the Taurus to a vote in the Bundestag.

The leader of the liberal faction in the Bundestag, Christian Durr, considered that this would be an opportunity, especially when he sees support in this regard from the CDU/CSU alliance and the Greens.

Durr estimated that he would count on the support of the Greens above all.

Several Green Party members, including Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock, support the supply of Taurus to Ukraine, but have not expressed their support for it due to discipline within the alliance, Durr told the Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung on Tuesday.

Moscow repeatedly insists that rearmament in Ukraine only prolongs the spread of a war, which has worsened since President Vladimir Putin ordered the protection of the rebellious population of Donbass on February 24, 2022, which denounced eight years of genocide in kyiv.
