Petro: Colombia will seek a change of method in peace talks

Bogotá, Nov 17 (Prensa Latina) Colombian President Gustavo Petro said today his government has decided to seek a change in the method of dialogue with the National Liberation Army (ELN), with which the negotiating table is going through a crisis.

In a pair of messages posted on his social network X, the president reflected on the Executive’s approaches with the different armed groups that operate in the nation and described the panorama that he considers prevails with each one of them.

He commented that strong post-capitalist production relations are already growing in the world without the need for wars.

“Post-capitalism is not decreed, it is made. It seems to me that, in concrete terms for the present, each agreement must lead to progress in the practice of what was agreed. Implement the peace process from now on. That is a change of method,” he said.

As far as the Gulf Clan is concerned, which is a dialogue that is about to begin, he said, it is essential to stop the incentives for the exodus of migrants to the United States.

“All the human rights of migrants are being violated, especially those of children and women, while those who have power in the United States do not want us, they believe us to be inferior and servants. Latin American human beings cannot be taken to the slaughterhouse,” he said.

He then stressed that all dialogues must begin with the real transformation of specific regions agreed upon bilaterally or multilaterally to begin their transformation from the illicit to the legal and to popular power.

He then questioned how to achieve the transformation of a forgotten region left to foreign mafias into another deeply democratic one in the hands of its own citizens.

He said at this point that the change of cocaine routes from the United States to the enormous markets of China and India, implies a real involvement of these last two countries in the real transformation of the economies of the Colombian and Ecuadorian Pacific.

“I invite China and India to a dialogue between civilizations to stop an enormous danger, which cannot be stopped with weapons, but with progress.”

In a second message, he stated that deep divisions prevail in the residual groups of the extinct Revolutionary Armed Forces-People’s Army, namely in the Central General Staff and the Second Marquetalia.

“These fractures occur around whether to make peace with this government or to deepen the warlike action that is increasingly directed at drug trafficking and against the people themselves in the regions of conflict in Colombia,” he said.

He considered this division in the armed groups is a step forward in peace, which can only be achieved with change and the real transformation of the abandoned territories of Colombia.

“I will insist on peace, not without being clear that those who do not accept the path of laying down their weapons and putting them at the service of the people will be defeated by the public force of the Constitution,” he emphasized.
