Farmers willing to support recovery in Cuba

Havana, Nov 30 (Prensa Latina) Farmers in Cuba today expressed their willingness to increase food production, and support government efforts to compensate for the damage caused by recent natural phenomena.

We have the responsibility to increase the efficiency of agricultural programs, plant more and increase production volumes, for which we count on the will of the farmers, said the president of the National Association of Small Farmers (ANAP), Felix Duarte.

During the last day of the XII Ordinary Plenary Session of the National Committee of ANAP, Duarte demanded a review of all processes and to emphasize the development of short-term crops to satisfy the urgent demands of the population.

At the Niceto Pérez Comprehensive Center, located in Güira de Melena, a municipality in the western province of Artemisa, he also stated that the peasantry has the challenge of closing the cold sowing campaign well and start the spring campaign in better conditions.

According to the head, the members of the Association are making important efforts in each territory, especially in those affected by hurricanes Oscar and Rafael, but it is necessary to improve the harvest of vegetables, root vegetables and fruits.

Likewise, he urged to improve rice production and coffee harvesting, in addition to increasing livestock and tobacco efficiency, due to their importance for the national economy.

Regarding the collection of milk and beef, an issue he considered very complex, he urged to organize and control these activities to guarantee delivery to children from zero to seven years old, pregnant women and residents with dietary needs.

The 12th Plenary Session is the prologue to the start, on December 4, of the municipal level assemblies of the organic process prior to the 13th ANAP Congress, scheduled for May of next year.
