African Union congratulates Kenya on 61 years of independence

Djibouti, Dec 12 (Prensa Latina) The Executive Secretary of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), Workneh Gebeyehy, congratulated the government and people of Kenya on the 61st anniversary of its independence.

After centuries of colonization and usurpation and after years of armed struggle, Kenya’s independence was declared on December 12, 1963.

On that day, millions of people gathered in Nairobi and at a public event, to the unanimous cry of uhuru (freedom in Swahili), they watched the flag of the British Empire fall forever, while the national emblem was raised as a symbol of a new era.
