This is a joint endeavor by FAO, the European Union (EU) and the Cuban Ministry of Agriculture (Minag), according to a press release issued on Thursday in Havana.
FAO indicated that the municipalities of Marti, in Matanzas, and Venezuela, in Ciego de Avila, will benefit from innovative technology for the efficient management of organic waste.
This happens within the framework of the Pilot, Horizontal Models for Knowledge Management and Technology Transfer in Agroecology (MAS) project; financed by the EU through the DeSIRA Program and implemented by the Minag and FAO.
Known as membrane biodigesters, this technology is key in the process of transforming swine and livestock waste into biogas and organic fertilizers.
This move not only contributes to sustainability, but also reduces dependence on fossil fuels, a critical element in fighting environmental degradation and climate change.
