Haitian journalists to contribute to fight against tuberculosis

Port-au-Prince, Dec 12 (Prensa Latina) A group of journalists will deploy an awareness campaign that will contribute to greater knowledge of diseases such as tuberculosis (TB) and malaria.

The initiative is carried out by organizations called Odelpa and Kouraj, which aspire to have the allied press more efficiently implement programs to improve access to services of the population.

In this way, they try to put a brake on a possible epidemic by preparing the response to the aforementioned ailments.

Haiti is now one of the countries most affected by tuberculosis and malaria in the Caribbean region, with 20 thousand cases registered in recent months, and is at great risk of suffering a health disaster, the digital daily Le Faceur Haiti warned.

Weeks ago, health authorities in Haiti reiterated the warning about the danger of TB spreading, due to the crowded conditions in which displaced people now live in the camps.

The director of the University Hospital of Haiti, Ardouin Louis-Charles, urged the competent bodies to resume the full range of services in the field of health to stop the chain of transmission of the virus.

The health situation continues to worsen in the refugee camps. The poor, living in inhumane and deplorable conditions, struggle to find health services, he said.

Even tuberculosis patients are not spared this torment, even though their case requires special attention to avoid contamination of other displaced people, Louis-Charles said.

Many centers in charge of overseeing the treatment of these patients were forced to close their doors after the escalation of violence in the metropolitan area of Port-au-Prince.
