At the tribute, held in the auditorium of the Casa del Maestro in Lima, the participants watched with emotion the video of the Cuban president’s speech at the Imperialist Tribune in Havana, before more than 500 thousand compatriots who on December 20 demanded the end of the economic, commercial and financial blockade.
The identification of the public with the Cuban president and his people reached the point where they applauded when the marchers applauded their president and joined the chorus of slogans with which Díaz-Canel ended the speech.
The event, which also commemorated the 64th anniversary of the founding of the Cuban Institute of Friendship with the Peoples (ICAP), included images of Cuban jubilation over the victory of January 1, 1959, and the victorious arrival of the historic Cuban leader Fidel Castro in Havana.
The tribute was organized by the Peruvian Coordinator of Solidarity with Cuba, which brings together the Peru-Cuba Friendship Houses throughout the country and is chaired by Nicolás Aguilar.
In a brief speech, Aguilar said that Fidel Castro, in addition to leading his people to victory in 1959, also founded the ICAP on December 30, 1960, with his vision of the future, to strengthen ties with all the peoples of the world and thus prevent imperialism from isolating Cuba.
The representative of the Cuban embassy, Carlos Portela, thanked the Peruvian solidarity and the historic friendship between both nations and highlighted the significance of the massive March of the Combatant People on September 20th, against the US blockade of Cuba.
After ratifying the historic decision of the Cuban people to defend their independence and self-determination and fight against the American blockade and for the removal of Cuba from the American list of countries that Washington designates as sponsors of terrorism.
He asserted that the historic position of his people remains firm in the face of the aggressive policy against the Island that the next American administration is outlining.
The diplomat pointed out that the cause of his country is that of all the peoples of the world because, just as the Island is attacked today, tomorrow any other people will be.
The tribute was greeted by various organizations, such as the Peru Libre Party, the Socialist Left, the Workers, Peasants, Students and Popular Front, the Alfa y Omega collective, the Todas Somos Micaelas group and the troubadours Piero Bustos and Antonio Zevallos who performed Cuban and Latin American revolutionary songs.
