On his X profile, the Colombian leader acknowledged the decision announced by the Joe Biden administration on Tuesday, and considered that eliminating punitive measures, even if partially, is progress.
The head of State also referred to the next occupant of the White House, Donald Trump, who, according to him, only invited the extreme right to his inauguration on January 20.
“Not engaging in dialogue while recognizing Latin American diversity is the best way to lose a continent and deepen the decline of the North. So I expect from the new United States Government, dialogue and civilized understanding and an America made up of equal and free human beings,” Petro also wrote in his message.
Another political figure who highlighted Cuba’s removal from the aforementioned list was former Colombian President Ernesto Samper (1994-1998).
He noted that this decision was a moral debt that his country had with Cuba since the government of former President Iván Duque (2018-2022), when the efforts that Cubans were making to help peace in Colombia were ignored.
“Thank you Cuba,” the former head of State also wrote on his X account.
