Cuban film to be screened in Argentina

Buenos Aires, Jan 16 (Prensa Latina) Fans of Cuban films in Argentina will enjoy the award-winning movie "Fresa y Chocolate" (Strawberry and Chocolate, 1993), which will be screened at Gaumont movie-theater in the capital from this Thursday to January 22.

For seven days, movie buffs could enjoy a restored version of the film directed by Tomas Gutierrez Alea and Juan Carlos.

Set in Havana in the late 1970s, “Fresa y Chocolate,” based on the short story “El Lobo, El Bosque, y El Hombre Nuevo” (The Wolf, the Forest, and the New Man) by author and screenwriter Senel Paz, tells the story of friendship between Diego (Jorge Perugorria), a homosexual artist, and David (Vladimir Cruz), a political science student.

The film also depicts the society of the time and addresses issues such as the complexity of interpersonal relationships, acceptance, diversity, and inclusion.

“Fresa y Chocolate” was the first Cuban film nominated for an Oscar Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 1994. It also won the Goya Award in Spain and the Silver Condor award in Argentina. Its protagonists and directors won awards at the New Latin American Film Festival in Cuba and the Gramado Film Festival in Brazil, among other prizes.

More than thirty years after its world debut, the film remains a classic in Cuban filmography.
