“Peace is the best medicine! The Gaza agreement and the release of hostages is positive and encouraging. Too many lives have been lost and too many families have suffered,” wrote in X the director general of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus. “We hope that all parties will respect the agreement and work for a lasting peace. The health needs in Gaza remain enormous.”
The head of the United Nations Children’s Fund, Catherine Russell, also welcomed the agreement. “It is a relief for children and families who have been suffering for more than a year from bombing and deprivation,” she stressed, adding that “The war has exacted a horrible toll on children in Gaza, the scale of humanitarian needs is enormous.”
Russell considered that “the ceasefire must finally give humanitarian actors the opportunity to safely implement the massive response” to help the inhabitants of the Strip.
The commissioner general of the United Nations Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East, Philippe Lazzarini, also welcomed the news on X. “We welcome the announcement of the ceasefire in Gaza. Many have been waiting for this moment for the past 15 months. “This agreement will finally bring much-needed relief to the people,” he wrote. “What we need now is rapid, unhindered and uninterrupted humanitarian access and supplies to respond to the tremendous suffering caused by this war.”
