Argentina denounces dismissal of 1,400 health workers

Buenos Aires, Jan 17 (Prensa Latina) The secretary general of the Association of State Workers, Rodolfo Aguiar, denounced the decision of the Argentine government to dismiss 1,400 people from the health sector and announced the organization of protests.

The union leader noted that the expulsions put many hospitals at risk of closure and also criticized the elimination of vital programs of care, prevention and research.

We must define measures of force to stop the layoffs and thus avoid irreparable harm. The government is deeply committed to the adjustment and this decision is extremely serious,” he said.

In addition, he said that at the Laura Bonaparte mental health hospital 190 workers were unemployed, including 113 professionals and 77 administrative.

This leads to the closure of on-call, inpatient and day care services.

They want to take away fundamental rights, especially of the extremely vulnerable social groups. They are attacking life by ¨trying to shut down suicide prevention services,” he said.

We will initiate protests, occupations and sectoral stoppages. We do not rule out in the coming hours structuring a measure that will allow us to unify the demands of all hospitals,” he added.

Aguiar also lamented that the programs for the prevention and control of tuberculosis, HIV and diabetes, the Directorate of Vectors, Coordination of Viral Hepatitis, System Integration, Family Health, Zoonosis and Epidemiological Laboratory Surveillance were closed.
