Russia doubts changes in U.S. position on anti-Russian sanctions

Moscow, Jan 17 (Prensa Latina) Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov said today that his country doubts possible changes in the U.S. position regarding anti-Russian sanctions, despite statements about a viable dialogue.

“The US administration, while declaring its political willingness to dialogue, will not substantially change its character in this regard. This is no secret to anyone, there is no reason to harbor inordinate expectations, there can be no fundamental changes,” the Kremlin spokesman told reporters.

Peskov’s comment responds to the statements of the newly appointed Secretary of the Treasury of the northern nation, Scott Bessent, about his readiness to support the tightening of sanctions against the Russian oil industry if President-elect Donald Trump decides to implement them as part of a strategy to pressure Russia to negotiate on Ukraine.

In this regard, the official from Russia stated that “it would be strange if the future secretary would not support the decision of his president. That simply could not happen. If he did not support it, he would have to resign”.

On January 10, the administration of outgoing US President Joe Biden imposed sanctions against two of the Slavic nation’s most important oil producers and exporters: Gazprom Neft and Surgutneftegas.

More than 180 ships, dozens of oil traders, oil service providers, insurance companies and energy officials were also victims of these measures.

In the midst of Washington’s punitive actions, Russian President Vladimir Putin stated that the containment policy towards Moscow is part of the West’s long-term strategy and that unilateral measures are a serious blow to the world economy.

According to the Castellum.AI database, more than 19,500 individual and sectoral sanctions against Russia were activated in the last three years.
