The decision to suspend work on the dock was taken by the pressure exerted by the gang Wharf Jérémie, led by Chief Micanor Altes alias Wa Mikanò author of the massacre of 207 people in December 2024.
In March 2024, CPS suspended its operations for a similar reason, and even the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) lamented the looting of one of its containers in Haiti, from which products and materials vital to the health of children in this Caribbean country were extracted.
The offenders emptied 17 containers, one of which contained items to ensure maternal, neonatal and infant survival, including resuscitators and related equipment.
Also inside were products for early childhood, water supply, and other equipment, as well as essential elements for the development and education of the population.
UNICEF called this a violation of children’s rights, depriving them of life-saving medical supplies amid a collapsed health system.
In 2024 the port was liberated twice, but always the gang members returned to paralyze this important link of national and international trade.
