Economy main concern in El Salvador

San Salvador, 18 January (Prensa Latina) The economy continues to be the main concern of 75.8% of the population in El Salvador, according to a survey published this week.

Six out of ten people consider the economy to be their main problem, while seven out of ten think the country is better off than last year, mainly due to security.

In this context, President Nayib Bukele held his first press conference in which he stressed his defence of the reactivation of metal mining, despite the opinion of experts and academics who consider this practice an attack on the lives of Salvadorans.

Some, such as economist and independent consultant Cesar Villalona, assessed the situation, describing the president as an expert in ‘selling promises’, as seen in the projected economic miracle.

This week, the president’s announcement of the seizure of 4.3 tonnes of cocaine in operations against four ships in Pacific waters about a thousand miles off the country’s coast made headlines. Bukele described the coup, carried out by the national navy in early 2025, as ‘historic’.

On the other hand, the organisations that make up the Mesa Contra la Impunidad en El Salvador (Mecies) said this week, on the occasion of the 33rd anniversary of the peace accords of 16 January 1992, that there is no political will to guarantee transitional justice for the victims of the armed conflict.

These groups called on the Legislative Assembly to stop failing to fulfil its obligations on this issue and to approve the draft law on transitional justice proposed by the victims and the organisations that represent them.
