This was expressed in a communiqué which stressed the disagreement with the response of the Ministry of National Defense (MDN), which said it had no information on the whereabouts of nearly 200 missing persons.
The action began in November after Alvaro Delgado, presidential candidate for the National Party, declared that the Government had ordered the Armed Forces to provide information on those who disappeared during the dictatorship.
The communique detailed that “after the expiration of the extension requested, 70 days later,” a brief official response was finally received.
The statement stressed that the order mentioned by Delgado was given by the then Defense Minister, Javier Garcia, and not by President Luis Lacalle Pou, “as had been transmitted to us in the meeting with the candidates.”
They also pointed out that this guideline was verbal, addressed exclusively to the Army and did not include the other armed forces, with no clear follow-up of its fulfillment.
The organization denounced that this lack of concrete actions reflects complicity and concealment that perpetuate impunity still in force.
They pointed out that the silence within the Armed Forces and the inaction of political players continues to hinder access to the truth about the missing detainees. The group reaffirmed its commitment to the struggle for ‘Truth, Memory and Justice’ and demanded that the Armed Forces hand over all the information they possess, so that State terrorism is not validated.
